BACKGROUND: Back in the ‘70’s I searched and researched for any form of club or society involving hairwork that I could join myself. There was NOTHING. Then, just curious I began a search for any that might have been in the past. Librarians helped. No link to anything that ever existed was found.
Forming a society seemed like a great idea to bring people together today with the common interest of hairwork. I founded a one myself in 1992! It is called “H.A.I.R.” ...acronym for Hair Art International Restorers. To date it has not been challenged, or disputed by anyone - from anywhere as the "first hairwork Society in America! We have "members in waiting" and new members that get instructions from previous newsletters. I knew there would be "sister", or "cousin" (since men are involved, too!) societies, clubs, guilds, etc. springing up. I am delighted that they are!
Our "H.A.I.R. Society is presently on hold giving me time to complete my projects of a book and video. Ultimately, both are to have history, instructions, and wonderful stories about pieces, human stories related to antiques, and experiences with current beloved hairwork items. When they are ready you will be notified on these pages. I started on the book first, and got side-tracked when people began pleading for a visual format. Having my hands in both have slowed the process down. Still, something as buried as hairwork has been - for so many years, is not a quick and easy thing to research. There is so precious little PRINTED matter out there. Much is unraveled by slow, arduous detective work.
My husband and I are still having FUN doing our part to help restore, and educate people about the lost art of "HAIRWORK". As you learn, you can help do that too.
Ruth is not currently making Hair Art for sale.
